History of Pilates
Traditional Pilates is a form of exercise developed by German born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s.
Joseph believed injuries were caused by imbalances in the physical body. He observed that where someone had a weakness or poor alignment, they would overcompensate or overdevelop in a different area. This would often lead to pain or injury.
Therefore Joseph developed an exercise programme that would correct poor alignment and re-educate the body to move in a more efficient manner.
Pilates in the 21st Century
Helen has trained in the APPI method of Pilates which combines the principles of Joseph with a more scientific approach. Using her skills developed as a physiotherapist working with professional dancers she has adapted this teaching to produce Pilates which is more functional and challenging.
Helen uses a combination of matwork and equipment in her sessions and can accommodate both 1:1 tuition and group classes.
